Happy Friday!
It’s Black History Month here in US and I wanted to take a moment to commemorate all those Black Lives who fought for their community and earned them the respect they deserve. It’s been the longest Civil War for the Black Community, and happy they stand victorious today!
Black History Month is an annual celebration that started in the US in 1926. It was conceived by historian Carter G Woodson who proposed marking a time to honour African Americans and raise awareness of Black history. The month of February was chosen to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln, the US president who issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, and Frederick Douglas, an African American orator, social reformer, and writer.
Until three years ago Fenty Beauty by Rihanna was probably the most popular Black woman-owned brands I knew of. During Pandemic I started researching and now have a curated list of Black women-owned businesses that I enjoy shopping. Still a small list but my loyalty towards these brands has been unwavering- they are simply awesome!
Outfit details
- Yellow Blazer- BR x HARBISON ( black-woman owned )
- Jacquard Pants- H&M
- Green Bodysuit- ABERCROMBIE AND FITCH
- Boots- ZARA
- Bag- c/o STRATHBERRY
Fenty Beauty by Rihanna – I’m sure there were other brands that I liked much before Fenty Beauty, but never paid heed to the face behind the brand. Anyways, Rihanna owns 50 percent of the LVMH-backed beauty line. Fenty Beauty is often celebrated for its inclusive colour range, with the “Fenty effect” pushing other brands to also offer 40 different foundation shades. I am particularly obsessed with their lipsticks, their facial makeup- not so much! It’s too dry for my already dry skin.
Grass Fields– I discovered this brand through Facebook Meta Ads. Grass Fields is an African brand based out of the UK and CHRISTELLE & MICHELE NGANHOU are the sisters duo behind it. I’ve ordered Ankara fabric clothing wear from them on different occasions. Seriously, there is nothing more comfortable than those in summer.
Souk and Sepia– I mentioned about Souk and Sepia on my Instagram Stories and so many of you showed interest. They are based in New York, NY and are a proud member of the UjuuMedia Tribe, a platform for black woman owned consumer business. Their clothing is fun, quicky and worth taking a peek. I’ve ordered a couple shirts and sandals from them and I’ve been pleased each time!
Kosa Professionals– I was introduced to Kosa Professionals by a PR friend and I have ben hooked since then. It is a hair tools/ hair care line founded by Yummie O. Kosa Professionals offers four different types of ceramic and tourmaline flat irons. The flat irons are installed with Infrared Heat Technology designed to promote shiny and healthy hair and allow the heat to distribute evenly to prevent heat damage.
House of Harlow 1960– Launched in 2008 by creative director, Nicole Richie, what started as a costume jewelry line quickly evolved into a highly-coveted full lifestyle brand that has expanded into apparel, footwear, accessories and limited-edition specialty items. I shop House of Harlow 1960 exclusively at Revolve and their pieces are everything but blah. It’s totally up my alley.
