I was always a stickler for fresh scents. Be it my laundry, my linens, my kid, myself or even my home. I appreciate when things smell clean, fresh and have a nice subtle fragrance to them. Ever since Maze arrived I have become even more particular about how my house smells. Pet odors are clingy and can linger in the air and on your furniture for a prolonged time.
There are so many home fragrance products in the market. You go out to buy one kind and you’ll find an array of options, which sometimes can make your job complicated. But, if you know exactly what you need and what serves your purpose at home- shopping will be a breeze! I have rounded up some of the popular home fragrance types and shared the list in my order of preference.
Diffusers
Diffusers are my personal favorite. They look stylish and I find them the most effective. Plus, they are eco-friendly- the same jar can be used over and over, you just need to keep refilling the liquid. These could either be stick- based or mist based. I recently tried the Acqua Dell Bella home fragrance collection and I’m hooked. Think notes of ocean breeze, pearl blue water- very fresh and calming. I like to keep flipping the diffuser stick every week so that there is a uniform smell throughout.
Candles
Candles happen to the most popular and instant alternative to covering up bad odor. Needless, to say they are available in a plethora of options- round, tall, tapered, glass-jars, tea-lights and what not. I like to buy either the tapered ones or ones that come in beautiful containers so that I can recycle the container later my own candle wax.
Oil Burners
My mom introduced me to these. It’s literally a porcelain burner where you place the tea light candle at the bottom which then warms up the oil on the top realizing the natural aroma. You can either use essentials oils or my mom likes to use camphor combined with either cinnamon or clove. The only downside- it covers a very limited space if using one. In case of a larger room you might have to light up a few burners.
Plug-ins
I had them all around the house until I stopped using them a couple years ago. These look really good by your walls. But, if you left the empty refill jar plugged in, it would produce this bad burning smell, which I disliked. In my case it was a frequent thing as I would forget to replace the refill jar regularly. Hence I stopped using them.
Aroma Beads
These are my daughter’s favorite. She likes them in a bathroom as it you can color-match the beads to your decor. They are subtle, safe, cost effective and good for smaller spaces. I usually buy them for the bathrooms.
PotPourri
This could either be a colorful or an earthy mix of naturally dried flora/fauna. You can empty them in hurricanes or bowls as per your space. I like to keep switching the fragrance, so I always buy several potpourri fragrances. They do come in small packets which is a very clever hack for your closets.
Spray
Room freshener sprays- easy, no-brainer. They are the no-fuss alternative to home fragrance. It covers bad odors instantly, but is a temporary solution which I find very overwhelming. I prefer diffusers over these.
Make your own
This gives you room for all creativity. Bundle dried herbs, sun dry your fresh fruits, place fresh sliced fruits in a bowl of water, there are so many ways you can make your own home fragrance. Personally, I like cinnamon sticks and bay leaf bundled up.
Air-filter tabs
I recently found out about these on my last trip to Home Depot. These come like small tabs that you can place in your central HVAC filter, which supposedly aromatizes your entire home, but it failed miserably in my case. I think these were ineffective and not worth the price. I might give the filter spray a try next time.
