As much as I would love to keep buying traditional Indian clothing, the reality is that I don’t buy any. I don’t get much wear out of the traditional clothing here in the US, so there is no point in buying and hoarding.
On festivals when a traditional attire is called for, I mix and match my traditional pieces with western pieces to get what is quintessentially known as the ‘FUSION’ look.
There is something about a fusion outfit that keeps me yearning for more and with Makar Sankranti coming up on January 14th, there was no way I was going to miss a chance of putting together more fusion outfits. Whether it is a virtual celebration or a IRL get-together, there is fusion look for every mood and one that can act as your reference outfit to help you create your very own fusion outfit.
Makara Sankranti or Maghi or simply Sankranthi, is a festival day in the Hindu calendar, dedicated to the deity Surya (sun). It is observed each year in the lunar month of Magha which corresponds with the month of January as per the Gregorian calendar and is a day the people of India celebrate their harvest. It marks the first day of the sun’s transit into Makara rashi (Capricorn), marking the end of the month with the winter solstice and the start of longer days.
Makara Sankranti is observed with social festivities such as colorful decorations, rural children going house to house, singing and asking for treats in some areas , public fair, dances, kite flying, bonfires and feasts.
Like any other year, we shall be celebrating this holiday home away from home again this year. To keep the festive spirits high I plan on cooking special dishes, ones that are specific to this festival. Other than that dressing up, flying kites ( weather permitting ) and family-time is on the itinerary for Makar Sankranti.
See the video below for all the fusion outfits I created for Makar Sankranti- hope you’ll like them.
