Oversized, baggy clothing has a reputation for being one’s uniform either when you don’t want to put any effort into your #OOTD or when you are feeling blah. Stats prove that it is the new trend, the new supermom uniform for most during this pandemic and I totally agree- why even bother to dress up when there is no where to go? I hear ya ladies, but sometimes you have to do it for yourself, to feel good about yourself, to regain some sense of normalcy and most importantly for your better half to feel attracted to you….pinch me if I am wrong!
Comfort could be the main reason for most who hopped on that baggy bogie, I believe we can still rock that style in style! Wearing baggy and not looking drab is totally doable and I’ve rounded some easy tips on how you can effortlessly and skillfully rock that oversized look.
1. Show some skin
When wearing oversized clothing you might want to show some skin. Try to steer clear of pieces that can engulf your frame and make you look like a big sack of fabric. Showing some skin would break the flow of the eyes and take attention away from the frumpiness of your clothing. My dress is baggy but the shorter hemline helps take the focus away from it and redirect it to my gams.
2. Stay near your size
It is so easy to get sucked into the larger the size, comfier the clothing notion, but the truth is the larger the clothing the frumpier your look. Doing oversized is acceptable but doing overly oversized is a sartorial crime. Go up one or two sizes at the max but buying an XL for your XS frame is unforgivable. Clothing pieces that are many sizes too big for you are not going to be oversized only where you want them to be. Instead, they’ll be baggy in all the wrong places as well as the right ones.
3. When in doubt …Cinch it
This would probably have be my favorite way to rock the oversized trend. Wearing a belt or a sash over an oversized dress or a blouse for that matter is such a skillful way to make that baggy look work for you. You get to show off your narrow waistline and also showcase your knack for statement belts. Either belt it or tuck it in your jeans/bottom- you will look killer.
4. Keep your accessories sleek and streamlined
My necklace might be a contradiction to what I just mentioned, but the deep neckline called for some pizazz. Plus the dress being a solid color I needed something to make it look a little interesting, and hence the shell necklace. Talking about my shoes, I kept them solid and simple, but looking at it now, I feel I could have gone for a sleep pair of printed pump.
5. Keep some structure
Oversized clothes that have absolutely no structure to them often end up looking baggy and unflattering no matter how curvy your natural form is. Therefore, it’s important to make sure that the oversized pieces you wear don’t lack structure. Stay away from any relaxed-fit pieces that seem round or shapeless, as these are the clothes that are likely to make you look larger and wider than you really are.
Instead, make sure that the oversized pieces you wear maintain some type of shape and structure. This structure can be anything, from a tight, cowl neckline on an oversized sweater to a wide, bold collar on a loose-fitting coat or blazer. All your piece needs is some kind of fitted shape for eyes to land on that isn’t just an endless ocean of baggy fabric. In my case the peplum hem gives the dress some structure which otherwise could have easily passed for a blue and bigger version of my quilted Tory Burch bag… lolz!
