While most people are cutting back on holiday spending, I believe it is my responsibility to encourage them to continue doing so and also help them feel mentally happy about their decision and sartorially good about their existing wardrobe.
With the economy still being slow, things are about to get worse before they get any better. With more and more businesses shuttering down, a lot of folks will be thrown out of the work force leaving them at the mercy of their social security unemployment benefits. This is the time when people have to mellow down financially and still make their families jubiliant about the holidays. While preparing holiday favorite meals with the same fervor is the way to go, a little sartorial effort should also be made to set the note right for the holidays.
Velvet, sequins, silk, jacquard are some of the holiday popular fabrics and I am sure we all have that is abundance in our closets, I wanted to draw your attention towards the potential your existing closet has and how you could repurpose your old clothing this year to recreate newer, fresher outfits.
LAYER UNDER
This is my favorite way to repurpose a dress. We always layer up- how about you try layer under this year. Wear a thin knit turtleneck under your strapless/thin strap holiday dresses. I’m loving this turtleneck collection from J.crew- they are a thin knit, are slightly warm and come in an array of colors, textures and prints. They will make any stand out and no one will know that you are waiting an old dress from the past. Another stylish way to give your older sleeveless dresses a new look is by wearing an off-shoulder blouse under them- this instantly elevates your dress.
LAYER UP
Of course the good ole way to stay warm and keep the holiday glam quotient on is by way of layering up. Fancy embellished cardigans, belted duster cardigans, or even belated coats over any outfit makes your look stand out. I am a sucker for layering and cinching with a belt and I always advocate you try this too.
WEAR SKIRTS OVER DRESSES
Wearing your dress as a blouse under your skirt is a very smart way to maximize your closet, but the next time you do so- wear a skirt long enough for your dress to peek from below. Thus gives an element of interest and if the dress is printed and the skirt is plain, your outfit looks fab, just like this outfit.
MIX N MATCH
We all have coordinate sets in our closet and you are not goring to commit fashion crime if you split the set and use it in a different outfit. I love doing that and it’s such a great way to stretch your wardrobe. So, mix and match, layer and have fun!
SWITCH IT UP WITH YOUR ACCESSORIES
No matter what, always keep your accessories game strong. Layer your different necklaces when wearing a plain dress or wear a statement necklace under a blouse, the right accessories instantly take any outfit up a notch.
These are just some of the ways I resort to when trying to repurpose my closet. Which one is your fave?
