We all hear about Vitamin C everyday, coming from beauty editorials, beauty experts, or even bloggers like myself- but have you wondered why Vitamin C is always the talk of the town? In case you did not know, Vitamin C is the holy grail of all so-called “miracle” ingredients on the skin care scene. It’s antioxidant properties and ability to reduce hyper pigmentation makes it all the more desirable. It is a powerful, safe, science-backed anti-aging, liquid gold that actually works and protects your skin from future damage.
I have had the privilege to try out several brands and types, thanks to all my lovely sponsors, not all worked for me. I have a super sensitive skin and the ones with a concentration more than 15% did nothing but irritated my skin. Hence, I have shortlisted the ones that I use daily and which my skin loves.
Why to use Vitamin C?
- It helps fade hyper pigmentation
- It brightens
- It hydrates
- It evens out skin tones
- It reduces the appearance of under eye circles
- It protects against sun damage
- It helps promote collagen production
- It soothes irritated skin
- It is good for all skin types
How to use Vitamin C?
Depending on the formulation, Vitamin C can be used both AM and PM. I use mine right after the toner and sometimes mix it with my foundation on days my skin looks dull. It comes both as serums and oils and I’ve used both types. Serums are usually thicker and whereas Vitamin C oils are like beauty oils. In case you were wondering, the oils don’t really feel greasy, it is the consistency that resembles that of an oil. Of the four that I use, two are like oils and they never make my skin look oily.
It is always advisable to do a skin patch test prior to using Vitamin C as it can cause some side-effects. Test a small amount on your forearm, leave on for 24 hours. If no side effects occur, you can apply to your face. Discontinue use if you develop a rash, redness, or hives.
Which ones to use?
This list below is not comprehensive, just a round up of a few of my favorites that I’ve used in the past and use till date.
This vegan, gluten, and cruelty-free serum contains OLEHENRIKSEN’s highest concentration of vitamin C for daily use. It combines three Ole Glow icons—vitamin C, exfoliating acids, and banana powder-inspired pigments—to help improve skin’s elasticity, boost radiance, and defend skin against pollution. And, with hyaluronic acid, this multi-acid serum helps reinforce skin’s moisture barrier. It is good for all skin types.
This advanced antioxidant treatment and skin protector designed to defend against photoaging and reveal more youthful skin. It neutralizes free radicals, promotes collagen production and delivers unmatched antioxidant protection with a formula containing 15% pure L-ascorbic acid and 1% alpha tocopherol, plus ferulic acid for a super-antioxidant combination. I’ve used this for almost two years now and the results have been phenomenal. I use it mostly in the PM.
This serum is formulated with Vita-C Complex, which enhances L-ascorbic acid stability and potency. It also includes glycolic acid to remove dulling surface cells and help vitamin C support skin more effectively. The dual-chamber package delivers a concentrated, fresh dose of vitamin C and glycolic acid with every use. Glycolic acid in Vita-C Glycolic Brightening Serum may produce a slight tingling sensation that is temporary and normal. I use this daily and also mix it with my foundation for extra hydration and glow.
Time to recharge your radiance with this glow-giving vitamin C-enriched oil. Advanced vitamin C—blended in a base of cold-pressed, red raspberry and evening primrose seed oils—gives your skin a fresh burst of luminosity. Golden turmeric extract is rich in antioxidants and calming compounds to improve the look of skin evenness. This was the first Vitamin C I used almost five years ago and there has been no looking back. I use this oil every other day, both AM and PM.
