Mother’s day falls on May 10th this year and like any other mom I expect to be honored that day. Honestly speaking, Mom’s should be honored each day, everyday but unfortunately it doesn’t work like that. These holidays have lost their true essence and have become merely commercial gimmicks, and retailers have been successful at manipulating and influencing consumer shopping behavior. So like it or not MOMS, this is your only day, your only chance to shine.
Since we all have been quarantined indefinitely, the celebrations will have to be confined within your own home. However, a handful of states are gearing up to ease social-distancing and open some of their nonessential businesses as early as May 8th, which might not be a good idea, but could be good news for those who are willing to venture out and celebrate Mother’s Day outside in public. My family and I have decided to continue our social-distancing and isolation until we are mentally ready to step out in public and our state has witnessed a downward trajectory in cases for four consecutive weeks.
Anyways, for those who shall be celebrating Mother’s Day at home with their family, I’ve got not five, not seven, but ten ideas to make Mother’s Day uniquely memorable this year.
No Chores
Since it is going be a Sunday, mom will not have to homeschool or report to work at least. It has been relatively tough and exhaustive for all moms to manage work, kids and home with little or no support and all moms deserve a no-chores day. Dads can take charge, depute and get chores done that otherwise moms have to over the weekends.
Breakfast-in-Bed
Nothing like breakfast in bed. Don’t know about all moms, but it’s me who fixes breakfast in my household every morning 365 days and it would certainly be a dream come true if my family treats me to a hot breakfast that to in bed. Check out my blog post HERE for some tips on how to put together a breakfast in bed tray for your mom.
Spa Day At Home
This is the day for moms to relax and claim their queenly domain- even if it’s the bathroom. Moms deserve some downtime on this day and nothing like a milk bath or soak in the tub. Generally it is a quick shower for me but this day I demand a quiet uninterrupted hour in the bathroom. Light up some candles, play some soft music, pop open your mom’s favorite bottle of wine and let her soak in her favorite bubble bath or bath bombs.
Flower Delivery
Good news that the flower delivery companies are still delivering flowers. Most of the online florists are offering Mother’s Day special bouquets, discounts and free delivery too. Order a big bouquet of flowers in your mom’s favorite color and have it delivered to first thing in the morning. Flowers never fail to bring some cheer. Some online florists to consider – FTD Flowers, Teleflora , 1-800-Flowers.
Thoughtful Gifts
Glad the mail and package delivery services are on and you could order thoughtful gifts for your mom. Considering the life crisis we all ladies are in a DIY home manicure kit, a facial kit, a hair-color kit, anything that has to do with beauty and self-care would make a great and much appreciated Mother’s Day gift.
Zoom Party
Zoom is the new normal. It is the fastest growing business app that probably the entire world is relaying upon for staying connected with friends and family. Apart from hosting online classes and business meetings, people are using it to host game nights, date nights, drink dates, so why not organize one for your mom this Mother’s day or surprise her with a virtual fitness or paint night class. A drink date with her other mom friends, or even her mom, or may be a group physic reading- all of it sounds awesome.
Neighborhood Celebration
If your family maintains a good rapport with your neighbors, it’s time to show your neighborhood’s moms some group love. Plan and coordinate- have each family make their own window displays with some Mother’s Day banners, hand made signs, cards for all the moms, handmade bouquets, window decorations and sort. Take a walk with your mom through the neighborhood while maintaining social distancing and enjoy all the handmade window displays. It will be a fun community Mother’s Day celebration.
Dedicate The Day To Mom
Well, obviously the day is dedicated to moms, but if you want to entirely dedicate the day to your mom- think all her favorites. Her favorite food, her favorite drink, her favorite flowers, her favorite music, her favorite pastime, everything her favorite. She will feel extra special and cared for.
Gift Cards/Certificates
While most retailer stores are closed, their online stores are open and you could buy Gift Cards for your mom which she could use at a later time cuz Gift Cards don’t expire. So if you and your family are avoiding shopping for all the valid virus reasons, this might be a good time to order e-gift cards for your mom. Groupon is also a great option to buy gift certificates for service retailers. These usually have a six month to a year long validity, so your mom shall be able to redeem it when things are better and situations under control.
Dinner Delivery
Last but not the least- order takeout/delivery for dinner. Order food from your mom’s favorite restaurant, have it delivered, set up the table, make it extra special with some champagne and candles and voila- perfect way to end anyone’s day!
Do you have any hint ‘what your kids are planning for you for Mother’s Day?’ I don’t, but it better be good…………
