When I moved to the States thirteen years ago, gosh can’t believe it has been so long, I was a complete stranger to the fashion scene here. In summer, for me a pair of jeans, a tee was my uniform: plain Jane and simple! In winters, a winter coat would top off the summer uniform. Talking about which, little did I know of the myriad options of winter coats available in the market. For me it literally implied a long piece of warm fabric meant to keep me warm. Down jacket, pea coat, puffer jacket, duffel coat, teddy coat all these sounded french to me……
I am glad that’s not the case now. If you ask me, I will sit high on a chair, roll up my sleeves and give you an extensive walk-through of all the types of coats out there- no kidding !! So if you have been a stranger to the world of winter coats, listen up, I am talking about the five most popular winter coats/jackets and why you need them in your closet.

DOWN/PUFFER JACKET
A down jacket is a jacket which has been insulated with the soft and warm under feathers from duck or geese. Down is a fantastic insulator as the loft (or fluffiness) of down creates thousands of tiny air pockets which trap warm air and retain heat, thus keeping the wearer very warm. A down jacket is casual and also available in several hem-lengths, knee-length being the most popular. Most of the times, the jacket has a fur lined hoodie for extra ear protection.
DUFFEL JACKET
A duffel jacket is made of genuine double weave Duffel, lined with a woolly tartan pattern, or self-coloured on the wartime version. There are three or four front wooden or horn toggle-fastenings with rope or leather loops to attach them to, thus also known as a “toggle coat!” This usually comes in a longer hem line and is a dressier coat.
PEA COAT
A pea coat (or pea jacket, pilot jacket) is an outer coat, generally of a navy-coloured heavy wool. Pea coats are characterized by short length, broad lapels, double-breasted fronts, often large wooden, metal or plastic buttons, and vertical or slash pockets. It can be worn both in a casual and dressy setting.
JACQUARD COAT
Dressiest of em all and in simplest terms- a jacquard coat is what you see on me. Made from jacquard fabric, these coats are considerably thick, warm but not necessarily freeze-control and super stylish. If you need to add glamour to your look, a jacquard coat is a fail-proof option. Based on the quality of the fabric used, these could range well in hundreds.
ANORAK JACKET
An Anorak jacket is a very heavy-duty jacket with a hood — more sporty and practical than urbane. Anoraks have been the go-to coat for women who care more about preventing frostbite than looking fashionable in sub-zero temperatures. Anoraks are typically shorter in length and are more functional.

It is a gorgeous coat indeed. I was a bit skeptical about the puffy sleeves but it kind of worked. Thanks for stopping by to link your outfits.

Oh my word, this coat is amazing! Absolutely stunning and so beautiful. I live in a very cold climate so I have a pretty extensive coat wardrobe. I have puffer coats, pea coats, and jacquard coats, but I am not one for duffle coats or anorak jackets. This is a great round up of must have coats though!
